Try out Samantha-inspired ‘ice bath for six minutes in 4 degrees centrigrade’ but tweaked a bit for Hyderabadis

Actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu was on a girlcation in Bali last month and gave us all a glimpse of her ‘ice bath for six minutes in 4 degrees centrigrade’. If you went ahead and Googled Ice Bath, it’s only fair as it is the new wave of cryotherapy that is sweeping the wellness world. Now, the same ‘trending cryotherapy’ is available in Hyderabad. Shaik Azgar Sultan, a wellness coach in the city, has brought in what he calls the Icemanindia concept. It’s an ice bath in XXXL size, with nothing less than 100 kg of ice.

Ice baths are exactly what they sound like. A bath where one steps into ice water. However, the flip side to it is that one needs to step out of it every three minutes (or less depending on one’s tolerance) and it also takes some breathing exercises to be able to go through the experience and reap the benefits. “Ice baths are popular for those with body soreness caused due to accidents, injuries or inflammations due to excessive work outs. It is also for those with insomnia,” says Azgar.

Ice baths ride on the contrast therapy concept which is based on the fact that the body heals faster when exposed to diametrically opposite sensory experiences. “One can barely stay for a minute stay in ice. For best results, one has to be exposed to ice for about 30 minutes and that is possible only by alternating between zero and room temperature,” he explains. There are about 30 minutes of breathing exercises taught to the person who is taking the therapy. The therapy involves one stepping into the water, staying for a few minutes, coming out and doing some breathing exercises, prep oneself for the onslaught of the chilling water and come out again.

Azgar’s motivation to bring this to Hyderabad was seeing his friend with a bad back getting healed almost instantly after he undertook the ice bath therapy in Thailand. “I was shocked to see his progress and I researched about this therapy and have brought it to Hyderabad,” he says.

While many spas and wellness centers abroad have ice bathtubs, Azgar’s concept is a mobile ice bathtub concept where he lugs around an inflatable tub and ice to go along with it to anyone who orders for it. “It can be set up in a balcony or a courtyard. The entire process of inflating the tub and filling in takes about 30 minutes,” he assures. There are no side effects of this as it involves ice. ‘When you injure yourself, the doctor tells you to use a cold compression. The bath is based on the healing properties of ice,” he adds. Azgar needs at least a day’s notice to bring his paraphernalia to the site. The cost works out well when at least 10 members in a gated community ask for the therapy on their premises. Next time you feel a body sore, try the ice ice ice bath baby.
