WOW! visits Hyderabad’s busy streets to see what they have in store for the season
Summer is here! Even though it’s hot, yet we find ourselves taking to the streets alongside a clamoring crowd of shoppers, vendors and hagglers, sweaty yet all ready to shop till you drop.
As the sun shone down on us, we decided to explore some of the most packed shopping streets of the city, including Secunderabad’s famous General Bazaar, Ameerpet’s shopping haven found beneath the metro-line, and Abids’ spirited Sunday market.
CLOTHES
On our way to General Bazaar, we chanced upon a line of street shops gearing up for the summer at Secunderabad’s Park Lane area. Their display included denim shorts, plaid shirts and tank tops in varied hues. We even found ones featuring Telugu blockbuster movies like RRR. Meanwhile in General Bazaar, we came across a more feminine line-up including dupattas made of cotton, chiffon and organza; cotton tops with lace work; knitted crop tops; denim shorts and sleeveless jackets; pista green rayon co-ord sets and more, all starting from Rs 300 onwards.
At Ameerpet, located beneath the metro station, we saw hakoba cotton short tops and a colorful line-up of kurtis. There were beautiful floor length cotton and denim dresses with jackets and matching sling bags, all upwards of Rs 200. While at Abids, street vendor Mr. Mohammed Salim was kind enough to guide us through everything that is sold at the Sunday clothes market, which includes a vibrant collection of shorts, crop tops, denim pants, jackets and t-shirts that start from Rs 100. “Vendors ask for Rs 150 but ultimately settle for Rs 100,” he shares, shining a light on what each Sunday looks like.
FOOTWEAR
Located near Patny, you’ll find a row of street shops selling footwear designs sourced from Patiala, Jaipur and Kolhapur. There are products for both men and women ranging from Kolhapuri sandals; Patiala mojris which incorporate mirror-work, stone-work and ghungroos; pastel-colored juttis and more starting from Rs 250 onwards for adults and Rs 200 onwards for children.
For something simpler, check out the sandals and juttis sold at General Bazaar. You can also get a wide range of colorful flip flops at the Ameerpet shopping carts, costing upwards of Rs 300 that could do the trick.
JEWELRY AND OTHER ACCESSORIES
If you walk through MG road, it is difficult to miss this seemingly popular street cart decorated with Rajasthani jewelry. With a price tag of Rs 180 onwards, these elegant pieces are made for the most part from oxidized metal. The products range from necklaces, nose rings, bangles, jhumkas, bracelets, chokers and more. It has been without a doubt our favorite find.
Ameerpet market also has other accessories like multi-colored shades and wristwatches in abundance. At General Bazaar you will find a wide range of classic jute bags, adorable ribbons, hair clips, colorful sets of caps and hats for adults and children alike, starting at Rs 50.
