Like Charminar and biryani, haleem is something that Hyderabad is known for. Made from broken wheat, meat, spices and ghee in a time-consuming process, haleem is a legacy of Hyderabad’s close connection with the Middle-Eastern countries. It is a complete food that helps regain strength after long hours of fasting during Ramzan. While the well-known Hyderabadi places like Pista House, Shadab, Café 555, Green Park and Shah Ghouse are popular destinations, on the other side of the spectrum are a few thousand outlets that come up during Ramzan to cater to the huge demand for this dish. Here we look at some very special haleem places from various parts of the city that have carved out a niche for themselves and can be explored for a different experience this summer. Their product has really turned out to be a hit with food lovers, immediately after its launch. The haleem here is extremely flavourful with a mild taste. 5. Mandar, Yousuf Tekdi: The haleem here is home-style with less spices, different from the usual fare you get in the city. They maintain a good wheat-meat ratio ensuring that the dish is protein rich. Abundant ghee with fried onions, eggs and cashew nuts further enriches the dish. 6. Saleem Ki Haleem, Shantinagar: This haleem has really been the breakout star in the last three years. Promoted by actor Mast Ali, well-known as Saleem Pheku the character he has played, the haleem is made using ‘potla’ meat, which gives a brownish color to the dish. 7. Biryaniwalla & Co, Banjara Hills: Replete with dry fruits, boiled egg and chunks of mutton, the haleem of Biryaniwalla is a recent favorite. The balance in flavors and home like taste are instrumental in this haleem having a lot of fan following. Apart from the haleem, their biryani deserves a mention, a must try!
